Boron Nitride Nanotubes for Nanotechnology
BN nanotubes have been prepared by chemical vapor deposition of borazine [O.L.Lourie et al, Chem Mater. 2000, 12, 1808-1810.] BN nanotubes are thought to be more amenable than carbon nanotubes for a number of applications. Thus BN nanotubes are predicted to have interesting electronic properties insensitive to tube diameters. A significant advantage over carbon nanotubes is the resistance to oxidation. Thus carbon nanotubes oxidize readily at 400oC whereas BN nanotubes are stable in air at 700oC [Y. Chen et al, Applied Physics Letters 84, (13) 2430, 2004. Currently, there are a number of routes for the synthesis of BN nantotubes and other BN nanomaterials of other geometries. Some of these synthesis techniques may find single source borazine and derivatives of use in this field.
